I have a question: What asl-learning programs/opportunities are there in Kandy Sri Lanka for a 22-year-old deaf girl? This girl was born here during an era where few opportunities existed for the non-hearing. She learned to read lips, which earned her an O-level degree. I think I can help her progress into a specialized field but she must know ASL.

Thanks.

[...] I leave you with this wonderful statement I found on yet another blog today. DeafDC’s Adam Stone is currently in Sri Lanka, and has had discussions over there about the state of communication at the school he’s working in. A wise friend of his made this remark: “People who do not learn sign language make deaf people disabled.” [...]

David said it best: “People who do not learn sign language make deaf people disabled.”

As a person who was born deaf (90db loss), but educated orally, and then harrassed, I repeat, harrassed out of an ASL class I signed up for in college, I highly resent this blanket statement. I have not learned ASL, and at this point have no need nor inclination to, even though I'm fascinated by languages (and am reasonably fluent in spanish & know a good deal of french).

The Deaf need to examine their own hostility toward non-ASL speakers before they cast too many stones. There are too many stories and too many perspectives.

That said, I'm completely bemused by Bald-Head's failure to learn ASL in his job capacity. It seems a more than reasonable job requirement, not option, in this case, and my questions would revolve around *that*, rather than condemning all people who do not know ASL out of hand. (And yes, if that were my job, I'd learn it right quick; and anyone giving me the slightest bit of shit for not knowing it already or not knowing it *well* would be looking a little ragged around the edges the next day, but then these days I'm a bit meaner and less tolerant of crap than I was in college.)

While we do have it better in America, the situation at Gallaudet is showing how insidious it is when people do not learn sign language. There are many, many, many, many examples of that at Gallaudet (DPS, Administration officials, staff, employees, faculty...etc).

On the surface it may seem better but when you dig, it's right there staring at you. "YOU ARE DISABLED." It's really aggravating and ultimately discouraginng and dis-empowering.

I think it would be a great teaching moment to explain to the deaf students at Rohana what's happening at Gallaudet and to show them that deaf people around the world are fighting for their rights as human beings.

David said it best: “People who do not learn sign language make deaf people disabled.”

Its ridiculous how something that can be put that succintly and really is that simple is so hard for so many people to grasp - I would say even here in the States. There are still parents that just don't get it and send their kids to places like Clark.

Are you planning to be a matron there?
