Aayu-Bowan

19 Sep

That’s “bye-bye” in Sinhalese. A quick shower, one last check of my worldly possessions, a squeeze for my now-lame Toby (see my other blog for a pix of her), and then it’s off to Los Angeles.

Gosh. I’m already feeling homesick. It’s a little scary, goin’ out all by yourself into a whole new country in Asia. Who am I to do such a thing? I’ll find out soon.

But first, Singapore looms! After a 14-hour flight to Taipei, an one-hour layover (I don’t change plans), and then a four-hour flight to Singapore, I’ll land around 11 AM and have about 11 hours to explore the quintessential city-state. And, thanks to the magic of DeafRead, this deaf blogger and I will be meetin’ up for a local Singaporean’s tour of the area. Hopefully.

After that, it’s Ceylon all the way, baby.

Yeah, we’re really gonna miss … um … ahhh … oh yeah — Adam — that’s his name. Yeah, we’re gonna miss him.

So, does anyone in blogland want to rent out his room? All the comforts of home – Close to the beach. Gimpy dog. Surrogate mom who will nag you at breakfast.

His last-day shopping spree covered gear at REI, sunglasses at Sunglass Warehouse, Apple Store, Barnes & Noble, Sav-On for yet more meds/sundries/batteries, barber for buzz-cut, Shake-Awake (delivered at dinner in Venice by his uncle Hank – no vendors in SD, but plenty in LA). Precious moments w/ Toby interspersed.

With still-twitching thumbs and an outward calm masking his deep inner turmoil and imminent e-withdrawal pangs, he somewhat shakily turned off his Sidekick, put it in its case, unclipped it from his belt, and put it on the carseat as we pulled into the parking structure at LAX.

Adam disappeared down the long security line in the Bradley Terminal just before midnight as the 18th became the 19th. He checked one bag – it was barely 75% full, and much of its weight was candy for bribing the schoolkids. His backpack was half full. Gonna buy all his clothes there.

As of 7pm PDT on 9/19, he’s in Singapore, enjoying his 12-hour layover. He’ll depart around 7am PDT 9/20, arriving Sri Lanka about 3-4 hours later.

aww, aayu-bowan. it was bittersweet waking up this morning to your page. i am so excited for you, but wish i could have waved goodbye from the airport.

wanted to just comment here with a biiiiig thank you to AdamzDad ;) for filling us in on what happened in Adam’s last hours in the U.S. before departing for adventure in Sri Lanka.

psst: during one of my classes today, sri lanka was mentioned as a place where they have to export labor because there are virtually no jobs available domestically and I thought of you being “imported” ;-)

    xoxo!!
